For most first timers, the swim is the most daunting part of a triathlon – but it doesn’t have to be!
Depending on where you race, the swim will be in the ocean, a lake or dam, or in a pool. The course will be well marked and there will be people providing water safety along the whole course.
The race will be started in groups, called waves, which will generally be people of a similar age and gender. If you aren’t comfortable starting in a group, stay at the back and wait a few seconds after everyone has begun and then start your swim. Your can swim any style you like, including doggy-paddle!
If you get tired, or just need to catch your breath, you can hold on to a water safety board or canoe.
When you have finished your swim, take your cap and goggles off and head to your bike (don’t give them to any spectators along the way).
